During the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for hand sanitizer around the world skyrocketed, which led to the launch of thousands of new brands. But not all products are safe according to international standards. Some over-the-counter hand sanitizer products have been found to contain small amounts of benzene, methanol, and acetaldehyde, which are chemicals that could cause cancer in people.
Most well-known brands follow the FDA and WHO guidelines, but smaller or unregulated companies often use cheaper alcohol substitutes, which raises the risk of contamination.
Which Chemicals Set Off the Alarm
Benzene, a chemical that is often found in industrial solvents, is the biggest threat.

Dr. Sameer Qureshi, a spokesperson for the ministry, said, “Consumers need to know that not all hand sanitizers are equally safe. Always buy from well-known brands and stay away from sellers you don’t know online.”
The Pakistani Ministry of Health has started testing random batches of hand sanitizer that were made in Pakistan and brought in from other countries. If manufacturers don’t meet safety standards, they could have their products pulled from the market or be suspended. Authorities have told people to look for labels that say the sanitizer is made with 60–80% ethanol and is approved by a trustworthy group.
